Aeration systems are amazing pond maintenance tools designed to infuse dissolved oxygen into your pond and circulate the water column with the overall intent to create a balanced water feature. Even with such an ambitious list of features most pond owners view aeration systems as a secondary tool or luxury item for their pond as they are often unaware of the benefits of implementing an aeration system.

An overwhelming majority of pond owners rely on their waterfall as a primary source of pond aeration. While splashing and rippling of water created by a waterfall stream creates a small bit of aeration it is nearly ever enough to adequately aerate your entire pond.

Running your waterfall pump also requires more electricity and yields higher energy costs than running a standalone aeration system which, like your waterfall and spitter pumps, will circulate the water column. Winter time aeration maintains an open hole in the ice allowing toxic gas to escape which is essential for fish health. When shopping for an aeration system, make sure you’re purchasing a unit that is designed to handle the entire volume of the pond. Purchasing an aeration system below the minimum requirements of your pond to save money can yield less than ideal results defeating the entire purpose.

A properly aerated and filtered pond becomes easier to balance requiring fewer chemical treatments and less overall maintenance resulting in less green in your pond and more in your wallet. With a wide variety of aeration systems available to pond owners, an aeration system should become a standard part of every water garden.

Can I use only 3 of the tubes with the pond air 4, or must all 4 produce air?

Ideally you should run all four to keep the most amount of water movement and aeration action needed in the pond.
If your pond is 2000 gallons then I would run all four, but if the pond is 1500 gallons you could cut it down to 3.
Just keep an eye on the pond, if the water is turning green or algae is starting to form then get the fourth one running.
