What’s the big deal about taking the pond temperature? Two of the main reasons are fish health and aeration. In a Koi pond we want to stop feeding the Koi when the water temp is close to 60 degrees, they cannot process food once the water become too cool. Know when to start up and shut down or move the diffusers of your aeration system. Start up in spring when the water reaches 55 degrees and shut down the system or move the diffusers when the water drops to 55 degrees. More on aeration start up and shut down on our, Aerator Start up page or When to Start the Aeration System.

In our experience with these pond thermometer’s we find that leaving them in the pond is not the best idea. Over time they seem to allow water into the number area and can become un readable. Take the temperature either floating on the surface or let it sink the pull the thermometer out and let it dry until next tie it is needed.
