What is Pond Dye? Why and when use it? Pond Dye is just that, a dye that colors the pond water to shade out the sunlight from growing filamentous string algae, plankton algae and weeds. If there are floating weeds or weeds above the water surface the pond dye will not be able to shade them out. This is why it is important to add pond dye early in the season to prevent growth. There are two articles on pond dye both include video about the pond dyes. There are three colors to choose from, Natures Blue, more of the blue colored water, Twilight Blue makes the pond look more natural in color like a bluish green and BlackDyemond that gives the pond more reflective appearance and makes the pond look deeper than it is. The best part is, ONE Quart per acre and 4′-6′ deep of protection. Color may vary depending on suspended particles in the water column , whether organic or inorganic. The only other thing to keep in mind is the out flow of your pond. A heavy rain or continuous flow of water will dilute the pond dye requiring the addition of more dye.
